So it’s not just me beetling on about making sure you do your backups! Apparently there is a whole World Backup Day dedicated to it! If you go to places like My Memory or Amazon on the web, you’ll find that you can get portable hard drives that are big enough to take all your important documents , your music and pictures for less than £30.
It is quite surprising that from what I’ve seen, the average home user actually only needs about 50GB of storage space and in may cases, as little as 10GB is needed for all their important files!
Quite recently I visited a busy office where all the files were documents with hardly any music or photographs of course but they were still only using about 95GB of the 1TB drive they had installed and that included the Windows 10 operating system! In English this meant that they would’ve had to carry on for another quarter of a century before they ran out of space on their hard drive. However a nasty power spike can render their hard drive dead instantaneously and their business would come to a grinding halt if they have no means of recovering the lost data.
You can get flash drives, you know the thumb shaped sticks that you plug into the hole in the side of the computer, for around £10 and will probably be sufficient for backing up all your critical files.
So there is absolutely no excuse for not making sure you are safe rather than sorry!
Get on line, spend the price of three sandwiches, get your backup stick delivered tomorrow and breathe easy - and remember, a file doesn’t exist unless it is in three separate places, computer, cloud and external backup drive.
